Black locust is a medium 30 – 50 foot tall deciduous tree that has naturalized throughout the United States. A prime specimen will grow in a tall columnar shape, however it will also sucker and produce a dense thicket unless pruned. The dark blue-green leaves are compound with up to 23 lance-shaped leaflets. The hanging pea-like flowers are fragrant and attract bees. The seedpods are 4-5 inches long and are smooth, flat and purple-brown.
