Cucumber magnolia or cucumber tree is the only magnolia native to Missouri. The genus name honors French botanist Pierre Magnol (1638-1715). Its common name comes from the green, warty fruit that follow the flowers. The flowers are a fragrant greenish-yellow growing at the tips of the twigs. The seed cones turn red in late summer. Unlike other magnolias, the cucumber magnolia turns gold in the fall. It requires a large space, growing 40-70 feet tall with a truck diameter of 3-4 feet.
