Eucommia, also known as hardy rubber tree, is grown as an ornamental shade tree because of its foliage and resistance to insects and diseases. Native to China, it is thought to be extinct in the wild.
Rubber can be made from the tree sap: tear a leaf or peel some bark to extract a stringy latex-like sap. Eucommia is grown as a shade, street tree requiring low maintenance. It can grow either in full sun or part shade and is drought tolerant. It produces small brown flowers in April.
