Italian Alder – Alnus cordata

Italian alder is a fast growing, medium-sized deciduous tree native to Corsica and southern Italy. It prefers full sun to part shade and a medium to wet soil. The yellowish-green male flowers and reddish-green female flowers bloom in March, producing small cones which persist into winter and provide food for birds. The leaves remain into December. The alder provides an excellent windbreak when planted in rows, as in this row of 8.
