Leyland Cypress – X Cupressocyparis leylandyii

Leyland Cypress is a medium to large needled evergreen tree which is very fast growing. It is not too particular about soil except the soil must be well drained. Full sun is required or the tree will be scraggly. This is primarily a tree of the southeast with Missouri being near the end of its range. Trees are columnar to pyramidal when mature with fine feathery foliage contributing to a graceful look. Leyland cypress can be repeatedly pruned to maintain a desired shape; although its relatively short life limits its use as a screen in landscape settings. Its graceful shape and fine texture along with a fast growth rate make it a valuable Christmas tree.
