Pacific Sunset Maple – Acer truncatum x Acer platanoides

Location: 8132 Cornell Court

Pacific Sunset maple grows about 30 feet tall and 25 feet wide making it a good choice for many yards. Leaves are glossy green in summer turning bright yellow then orange and red in fall. Bark develops a gray-brown color and may be fissured as the tree ages. Flowers appear in May; they are greenish yellow and up to one half inch in diameter. Samaras up to 1.5 inches long follow.

Pacific Sunset is the trademark name for the cultivar ‘Warrenred’ and is a cross between different species of maples. This sometimes occurs in the wild, but in this case the cross pollination was done by a breeder wanting to select certain characteristics from each of the parents.
