Red buckeye is a deciduous shrub native to southeastern Missouri, where it is often found in valleys and along streams. It reaches a height of 10 – 20 feet. The shiny dark green leaves are palmately compound. The showy colorful flowers occur in 4-10 inch long panicles in spring and attract hummingbirds. The seed capsules ripen in the fall and encase a smooth brown seed or buckeye, which is poisonous and avoided by wildlife.
