The star magnolia is a slow-growing small tree, native to Japan. It has showy white or pink flowers in the early spring before the leaves open. It grows to about 15-20 feet tall and wide. The flowers have at least twelve petals. The leaves open bronze-green and turn deep green as they mature.
The trees produce a reddish green fruit which split as they mature to reveal orange-red fruit. The main trunk has smooth, silvery bark and is deciduous. It likes stream sides and boggy areas.
