Sugarberry – Celtis laevigata

Location: Fogerty Park, east of shelter

Sugarberry, also known as sugar hackberry or southern hackberry, is a southern version of common or northern hackberry. Its fruits are jucier, the bark is less corky or warty and the leaves are narrower with smooth margins. Sugarberry is native to southern US and in Missouri grows along streams and in floodplains. Birds are attracted to the abundant fruits and distribute the seeds.
