Sweetbay magnolia, native to southeastern US, grows either as a 15-20 foot tree or as a shorter multi-stemmed shrub. In the deep south it can attain a height of 60 feet. The cup-shaped, creamy fragrant flowers appear in spring and may continue through summer. The glossy leaves are shiny green above and silver beneath, and in the St. Louis area are generally deciduous. It produces cone-like fruits with bright red seeds in the fall.
