The trident maple is native to China, Japan, and Korea. It should be planted in full sun to part shade in well-drained acid to neutral soil. It is a small lawn or patio tree. Its mature height is 25-35 feet tall and 15 to 25 feet wide. It tolerates salt, air pollution, wind, and drought. The flaky bark exfoliates into showy plates, as the tree grows older. It should be pruned to have one main trunk. Branches should not be allowed to get too large because they can cause the tree to split. It has beautiful fall color with red and yellow leaves. This tree makes an excellent bonsai tree.
