Wingnut – Pterocarya fraxinifolia

The wingnut tree is in the walnut family, Juglandaceae. It is native to Asia. The botanic name is from ancient Greek, “wing” + karyon, “nut.” The trees are deciduous and grow to 35 – 70 feet tall. The leaves are pinnately compound with 11-25 leaflets. They are large, attractive and fast growing trees. They produce a walnut shaped fruit about the size of a chickpea. Trunk diameter as large as 8 feet have been reported.
