History

U City in Bloom, is a not-profit organization that designs, plants and maintains over 200 public gardens and planters throughout University City, Missouri.  Founded in 1985 by three visionary citizens, U City in Bloom is guided by a Board of Directors and Executive Director, and has a full-time Horticulturist supervising a staff of gardening experts assisted by a loyal band of volunteers.

U City in Bloom hosts a  biennial Garden Tour, an annual Plein Air art competition, a Spring Plant Sale, and helps organize and benefits from the annual University City Memorial Day Run.  U City in Bloom works closely with the City of University City, and is committed to environmental education in partnership with our public schools.  U City in Bloom’s gardens are located throughout University City…in the Civic Plaza, the Delmar Loop, at our public schools, in parks, along major streets and in the quiet neighborhoods all over our city.

Volunteers

Volunteers are the heart of our organization. Our volunteers help with planting, weeding and watering our public garden locations, work with students at our school gardens; and are critical to the success of our fundraising and special events.  We have a job to fit everyone’s busy schedule.  Staff members and volunteers working out in our gardens are the public face of our organization.  They are friendly and outgoing, answering questions about gardening, or perhaps just giving passer-bys directions to where they are going.

Both individuals and groups are welcome to volunteer.  If you are interested in volunteering with us, please fill out the information below.  No previous gardening experience required, and it’s a great way to learn more about making your own garden bloom!
