Native plants are incorporated in all of U City in Bloom’s gardens, but our Bird Garden, located in the southeast corner of Centennial Commons (7210 Olive Boulevard), is devoted exclusively to natives. Birds, insects, and other wildlife in our area evolved alongside native plants and use them for food, shelter, and a place to raise their young. UCB Board Members Jane Schaefer, Mary Ann Shaw, and Annette Stowers have labeled the majority of the perennial plants, shrubs, and trees growing there. 
Jane is a Master Naturalist and Mary Ann and Annette are native plant experts as well.
This large garden has dry, sunny spots as well as parts in deep shade, a water feature, and a rain garden. It demonstrates what grows well in these different environments. When considering new plants for your garden, visit the Bird Garden throughout the changing seasons to see what is blooming there. Check the labels to discover what varieties represented here might be good additions to your home landscape.
