U City in Bloom Volunteers get ready to lend a hand. U City Received National Community Award
USA Today and Newman’s Own honor the efforts of outstanding people who lead Make a Difference Day projects. Only three Community Awards are given each year, and winners are chosen based on: identification of a national or community need, organization of the volunteer project to effectively address that need, overall performance and estimated long-term impact of the project.
Winners received a $10,000 grant to give to the charity of the community’s choice. University City is honored to be named as one of this year’s recipients and granted its award to Safe Homes for the Elderly and Disabled (SHED) – a local non-profit that helps seniors age in place through an Adopt-A-Block program.
U City in Bloom will join the Adopt-A-Block effort by helping with weed control, clean up and mulching designated homes in the 6500 block of Etzel . We will meet at 9:00 am, Saturday, 6/13 at Mt. Gideon Church, 6505 Etzel. Bring big pails, your own garden clean up tools and gloves. Our crew chief, Jack Breier, will gives us our ‘marching orders’.
